It’s hard to think in terms of workplace literacy difficulties with earthquakes and tsunamis shattering the lives of so many overseas right now. Nonetheless there are people in those countries doing jobs under difficult conditions and some of those will be further handicapped by their literacy levels.
In a disaster there is still record-keeping to be done: survivor names to be writen down so relations can be informed that they are alive, tallies of supplies to be kept, directions to be given and followed. Lives, rather than production, could depend upon literacy and communication skills.
