Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust

In my lifetime alone there have been so many changes, especially in the way we communicate. Letters have been replaced by emails, talking over the phone has been replaced by texts, and meeting face-to-face has been replaced by Skype. There are so many good and bad things about these changes. Our very own Adult Literacy Trust wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the internet.

I feel the one major downside to these changes in communication is that we just don’t really know each other anymore. Our stories are hidden behind our user names and emails. How much do you really know about your Adult Literacy Trust tutor or fellow students? Do you ever wonder what their story is?

I will start the ball rolling in the hopes that it will get more of you sharing your stories and to think of each other as more than just a user name or email address.
I am a 35-year-old stay at home mum of two pre-school girls. I love them to bits but they can drive me wild with the way they often call my name in a nagging mum-is-a-slave kind of way. Before kids I was a primary school teacher. I was also a magazine writer and editor when I was in my early twenties.

I have been married for 10 years, have an awful cat that hates everyone but me, and am the youngest of four kids. I live in Hamilton but was born in Palmerston North. I have also lived in Levin, Auckland and Huntly.

I have dreams of becoming a children’s writer and have two manuscripts that have so far been rejected by publishers. I hope to one day have enough money and guts to publish them myself.
I go to dance lessons once a week where I look clumsy and feel a bit silly but I enjoy it anyway. I love chocolate, hate it when drivers don’t indicate and the only shows I watch on the box is reality TV.
